Often times, starting a new year can become draining because it's either making resolutions that you have to keep throughout the year, or feeling like you have to start over or become a new person. For instance, the scalp is made up of layers of skin that provide nourishment to the hair bulb and follicles. While each hair follicle has its own growth cycle where hair strands are growing from the scalp and also falling out of the scalp. So, under normal circumstances we all lose hair daily. However, the growth cycle provides for the continuous growth, fall and replacement of each individual hair strand. The growth cycle consists of three different phases; anagen, catagen, telogen. Each hair follicle has its own unique growing cycle. For instance, a hair that is used in the telogen phase is replaced by a new hair, in that same follicle in the anagen phase. So, if your scalp is in good condition your hair is always growing back to replace old hair that has fallen. (not to confuse old hair with damaged hair). It's also important to understand that (even if hair is not growing) the scalp still needs continuous nourishment, and care because it is on top of the head, and a part of the body. But, no matter what type of scalp or hair you have, at some point you must moisturize. Why should you moisturize your scalp or hair? - When the scalp or hair does not retain enough natural oils, which protect it and the scalp, it can look dry and possibly break. A dry scalp can itch and flake, and those are the two main complaints. The problem can then progress, and the scalp will often feel tight and tender to the touch. In many cases, the amount of oil that reaches the whole strands of the hair depends on the curl pattern. For instance, with tightly curly hair, the sebum (oil) sometimes has trouble getting to the ends, which can cause dryness. Many times, this is the reason curly or natural hair is much dryer than other types of hair.
Moisturizing products can raise moisture levels. Depending on the scalp or hair's condition, moisturizers can strengthen, hydrate, and prevent breakage. If your hair has been damaged by coloring or too much blow-drying and chemical straightening, it probably absorbs moisture very fast. In this case, hair can be more porous and needs more moisture. However, a head of hair that is normal and has not been damaged may only need average amounts of moisture. Warning: Do not over-moisturize- overuse is as bad as not using any, so don’t slather it on, or use more than needed. Too much moisture can also lead to clogged pores and blackheads, which can slow down your hair growth.
