Defining Yourself
Let's define the word self- 1) The person that someone normally or truly is. 2) A particular part of your personality or character that is shown in a particular situation. 3) The personality or character that makes a person different from other people. The combination of emotions, thoughts, feelings, etc, that make a person different from others.
Self concept- is the idea that you have about the kind of person you are. It is one that may continually change based on your awareness or perspectives about life. Your upbringing and the way you have experienced life can change the idea you have about yourself. The kind of person you are may have been defined or influenced by others, or it may be who you know you are and could be.
Explaining concepts about the self can make some individuals uneasy. It may be because we are accustomed to hearing that someone is selfish or that they are self-absorbed because they put themselves first. But, finding a balance so that you are aware of who you are, what you can handle, what you expect, and how you treat others; works better when you are aware of the relationship you have with yourself. Being able to do those things with clarity is a constant learning skill.
To clarify, having a relationship with yourself and understanding yourself is not an excuse to abuse, neglect or mistreat others. It’s meant to be a guideline to help explore the self deeper and make better changes for the continuation of growth and life. And it is always your choice.
